Supporting Harmony, Improving Nutrition and Environment for the Rohingya and Host Community (SHINE)”

PROTTYASHI and Helvetas intended to enhance food security, reduce catastrophe vulnerability, and build social cohesion in the host and Rohingya communities of Ukhiya Upazila to boost the resilience of the host communities and Rohingya refugees in Cox's Bazar. The targeted populations have enhanced capacity to secure their lives and property from disasters. Under this project, beneficiaries have been selected for Home Stead Gardening and cash for work. For homestead vegetable gardening, agricultural input purchased and distributed at the host and camp level. Three demonstration vegetable plots have been established at host and camp level for knowledge dissemination and awareness raising in the community people. Different cash for work (CFW) executing at the camp and host such as new road build up, stair repair, new stair formulate, side protection, drain cleaning etc are ongoing to secure their lives and belongings through disaster risk reduction. On the demo plot red amaranth, spinach, kalmi shak, Bombay chili, papaya, bottle gourd, and brinjal seedlings have been planted into the bed. Each beneficiary received BDT.350 per day as Cash for Work.  The purpose of cash distribution is immediately helping the poor people who are really vulnerable and could assist their family members at any type of crisis situation. The youth group is formulated at the camp level for IPT show through a community meeting with 10 youths among them 6 were female and 4 males. And the capacity development training already provided to them for engage them in terms of different awareness raising activities such as effects of early marriage, malnutrition and son on. And how they could recover the malnutrition through cultivate the vegetables in their homestead as well. The beneficiaries are now able to update their nutritional status, improve the environment, secure their live and belonging and create harmony between host and Rohingya community.
